Aunt Jana's Famous Pumpkin Soup

4 tbs butter
1 med size leek white part only
4 c chicken broth
1/2 tsp curry powder
1/4 tsp ground white pepper
1 bay leaf
1 large onion chopped
1 lb pumpkin(fresh or canned)
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ginger
1 c half and half(of course I omit this due to my milk allergy!)

in a medium soup pot, melt butter. saute onions and leek, stirring occasionally until soft. stir in pumpkin, chicken broth salt spices and bay leaf. bring to a boil lower heat and simmer,uncovered for 15 min-stirring occasionally. remove bay leaf. puree the mixture in batches in blender, for a smoother texture in a food processor fitted with metal blade. may be refrigerated or frozen at his point. when ready to serve, return soup to pot. add half and half and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally until heated. season to taste.

This is really yummy and tastes less like orange vegetable scary pumpkin and more like CURRY vegetable.

Dan learns to Scuba

We are excited for Dan. He is taking a class in high school PE, to learn to scuba dive. I went with him on the recent training trip and took some pictures of the class.
Here is Dan going down for his first open ocean beach dive. He is calm and controlled.

Dan is swimming with the group. They were under water for about an hour.

Here he is coming back up to the light.

We had a great vacation to Hawaii. We took some underwater pictures, like this one of Dan swimming with sea turtles in Wailea Bay.

This is us at the big luau, with location of King Kamahamaha special temple in the background.

We are eating lunch on Hapuna Beach. We swam and hiked and saw rainforests, ancient Hawaiian village, and the southernmost part of the United States. It was great.

Here is recent picture Elder John Taylor sent us, from Brazil. Looks like it was a baptism ceremony. He is fortunate to be part of the Lord's missionary army, and we are blessed by his being there too.

Spring Break 2010

This is the view from our walk in Southern Utah, near the campground in Kodachrome Basin.

We drove up to Salt Lake City to see Sarah. This is Sarah and Dan in the house that she is buying. It is a cute house, very close to Sarah's work place.

This is our camping spot at the Kodachrome Basin State Park in Southern Utah. It was very dramatic in weather, scenery and isolation. The red and white rocks, green trees and blue sky were stunning.

We camped at Zion's National Park and saw the beautiful cliffs and rock formations. Dan and I took a hike on the Watchman trail. It was not yet Spring there, but we were warm and comfortable in the new tent.

Working for Eagle Scout project

This is Dan Taylor, during his Eagle Scout project at the Mt. Baldy ranger station on November 14, 2009. He organized painting of this shed, and 9 picnic tables, and reconstruction of two redwood benches. There were 18 people who helped work on the project.

These are pictures of our trip to the Red Rose Retreat in July 2009.

We biked around the lake. The wild flowers were beautiful. We saw the dike with water on both sides. We swam at the spring.

Our new "patio" room; good for dinners and games.

This picture of Dan is taken on same spot Andy had his picture taken in 1958. I'm not sure but I think they might be the same fish too.

Even the dog likes to go fishing!

Here are some pictures from John in June of 2009. He said that many towns have a sign like this one outside of Botucatu. He is sitting in the middle. He said the cathedral was very impressive.

Buff Orpingtons

We got six new chicks for our backyard. These four are buff orpingtons, a breed that is good for eggs and are very pretty gold color. They will have brown eggs. We also got 2 americanas ( you can see them at the back of the coop), which will have greenish eggs. The black one is the last one left of our original black australorps.

Mt. Baden-Powell

Here are Dan and his friends on top of Mt. Baden-Powell. We climbed it on Saturday, June 20th. It was four miles up, and 3,000 foot gain in altitude. The peak is named after the founder of the Boy Scouts movement. You get a medallion if you climb it and take a picture to the scout office.

Here we are at the t0p of the mountain. The clouds rolled over us on the way down and it was dark and wet. Sofie loved the hike.

Sarah came to the Cabin with us in August. We had dutch oven dinners, caught fish, swam in the lake and took long hikes in the forest.

Johnson Space Center

We saw the Saturn 5 rocket engines when we visited the Houston Space Center with Laura and Noah. It was amazing to see the size and complexity of the rockets. Later we got to touch moon rocks and see the real moon rovers.

This is the way it looked when we visited Galvseston Beach in August of 2008 on a trip to see Laura and Noah. The Seawall and the houses beyond were destroyed by Hurricane Ike in September 2008.

Jana and Dan were at the Ward's youth trip at Carpenteria. The beach was open, the house was right on the sand. The young people loved being together, playing games on the sand and body boarding.
